Why Certain Smells Remind Us of Home

A familiar scent can bring back a memory before we even realize what is happening.

The smell of flowers may remind us of a family garden. Fresh bread may bring us back to a neighborhood bakery. A certain perfume may remind us of someone we have not seen in years.

Scent has a powerful way of connecting us to people, places, and experiences.
For many Filipinos, the smell of sampaguita can create an immediate sense of familiarity. Sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines. Its small white flowers have a sweet, rich, and recognizable fragrance.

Some people remember sampaguita garlands being sold outside churches or near busy streets. Others associate the flower with religious celebrations, graduation ceremonies, family homes, or visits to the Philippines.

Food-related scents can create similar reactions.

The smell of pandan may remind someone of rice cakes, desserts, or a family kitchen. Mango can bring back memories of warm afternoons and fruit stands. Ube may remind someone of birthdays, fiestas, and desserts prepared by their lola.

Even scents that seem ordinary can hold emotional meaning. The smell of coffee, coconut, clean laundry, rain, or wood smoke can become connected to a specific period in our lives.

This is one reason fragrance can feel so personal. Two people can smell the same candle and experience completely different memories.

One person may smell jasmine and think of a garden. Another may remember a church ceremony. Someone else may simply find it calming.

When we started creating Philippine-inspired candles, we wanted the fragrances to represent more than a pleasant smell. We wanted each scent to tell a story.

A fragrance inspired by Boracay can remind someone of ocean air, vacations, and white sand beaches. A Baguio-inspired scent may bring back memories of cool weather, pine trees, and family road trips. A pandesal candle may remind someone of early mornings and warm bread from a neighborhood bakery.

These memories are personal, but they are also shared. That is what makes fragrance such a meaningful way to connect with culture.

A candle cannot replace a place or a person. It cannot fully recreate the Philippines. But for a few moments, a familiar scent can make someone feel closer to home.

That is the beauty of fragrance. It can turn an ordinary room into a memory.
