Why Certain Smells Remind Us of Home

A familiar scent can bring back a memory before we even realize what is happening.

For many Filipinos, the smell of sampaguita can create an immediate sense of familiarity. Sampaguita is the national flower of the Philippines. Its small white flowers have a sweet, rich, and recognizable fragrance.

Some people remember sampaguita garlands being sold outside churches or near busy streets. Others associate the flower with religious celebrations, graduation ceremonies, family homes, or visits to the Philippines.
